Table of Contents
What is Kombucha?
Kombucha is a fermented, slightly fizzy, black or green tea drink commonly intended as a functional beverage due to its potential health benefits.
The slow brewing process involved in the preparation of Kombucha ferments it such that its probiotic properties are enhanced considerably. Most of the skin benefits of Kombucha can be attributed to the probiotic nature of this drink.
While it has become popular in recent years, Kombucha is actually an ancient beverage that was commonly consumed in China about 2,000 years ago. It was hailed as an anti-aging beverage for its natural and powerful energizing, rejuvenating and detoxifying properties.
Later with the expansion of trade routes, Kombucha tea spread to find its way to Russia and across Eastern Europe.
Over a period of time, the knowledge of the health benefits of Kombucha spread to other parts of the world. And today, a larger population is using it to improve their skin tone and complexion and enhance their physical and mental health.
How is Kombucha prepared?
Kombucha is made from a black or green tea base to which white sugar fermented with a form of “tea fungus” is added. This tea fungus is called SCOBY or a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast.
The contents are later allowed to ferment due to which its taste changes from a pleasant and fruity sour to a mild vinegary one after a prolonged fermentation period.
And once ready, Kombucha can provide your skin with a vibrant glow while also reducing a host of your skin issues including acne breakouts, wrinkles, fine lines, dark spots, and much more.
Before we learn how to prepare Kombucha toner and face mask, let us first have a look at how Kombucha can improve your skin health and enhance the skin tone, and complexion.
What are the benefits of Kombucha for your skin?
Reduces aging signs
Do you know why our skin becomes all wrinkly and hangs loose in folds as we age? It is because the skin loses its ability to produce elastin and collagen.
If your skin doesn’t have these 2 components, it can lose its firmness and elasticity. In other words, your skin can no longer stay taut on the underlying tissues and may not even be able to retract like an elastic.
This is when it starts developing wrinkles, fine lines, and those ugly skin folds!
You can slow down the appearance of these signs of aging by drinking Kombucha tea.
Kombucha tea acts as a natural antioxidant and protects your skin against damage by pollutants, sun, and free radicals.
This would delay the age-related changes in the cells that produce elastin and collagen thereby making sure your skin looks firm and youthful by defying your actual age.
Applying a face mask prepared with Kombucha tea can help your skin derive the benefits of its antioxidant and anti-aging properties directly.
Prevents acne breakouts
Kombucha made of green tea contains plant compounds that can protect your skin against acne. These plant compounds include phenols and polyphenols that possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and regenerative properties.
The antioxidant properties of Kombucha tea would prevent damage to the sebaceous glands situated beneath the skin. These glands are responsible for producing an oily substance called sebum that maintains the hydration of your skin and prevents excessive dryness.
However, blockage or damage in the ducts of these glands can result in the formation of acne breakouts.
The antioxidant properties of Kombucha could prevent free-radical damage to these glands and reduce the frequency of acne breakouts.
The anti-inflammatory properties of phenols and polyphenols could also reduce swelling, redness, and itching caused due to acne breakouts while the regenerative properties heal the damaged cells and restore the natural integrity of your skin.
Kills Bacteria
Kombucha tea also possesses potential antibacterial properties. The probiotic action of Kombucha tea allows only healthy bacteria to grow while destroying harmful pathogens.
This property of Kombucha tea could be beneficial for preventing the symptoms of skin infections such as redness, rashes, itching, pus formation, and acne. The antibacterial activity of Kombucha tea has been observed to be powerful against a wide range of organisms responsible for causing skin infections.
Reduce sun damage
Exposure of the skin to UV radiation in sunlight can trigger complaints like sunburns and dark spots. Excessive exposure to the sun is also linked to a higher risk of a form of skin cancer called melanoma.
You could protect your skin from the harmful impact of UV radiation by applying a face pack containing Kombucha tea.
Test-tube studies have revealed that kombucha may help to inhibit the growth and multiplication of abnormal cancerous cells, thanks to its high concentration of antioxidants and polyphenols.
Regular application of a face mask or toner prepared by using Kombucha tea may protect your skin against the harmful sun rays and reduce your risk of melanoma.
Enhances skin tone
Preparation of Kombucha tea basically involves allowing the contents to ferment. And we all know that this process results in the formation of contents that are acidic in nature. It is this acidic property of Kombucha that could help enhance your skin tone and complexion.
Dark pigmented spots and patches appear on your skin due to an imbalanced production of a pigment called melanin.
Melanin is responsible for providing a darker color to your skin. Increased and uneven production of this pigment can result in the appearance of patches and spots that can hamper your looks.
You could be able to reduce these patches and spots by drinking Kombucha tea or applying a face mask or toner prepared from Kombucha tea. This benefit of Kombucha could be helpful for men and women who are suffering from pigmentation disorders such as melasma.
The acidic action of this drink could lighten the dark spots and make the skin even-toned. It could also reduce the production of melanin and allow your skin to appear a few shades lighter. It can enhance your skin complexion and brighten it thus allowing you to ooze radiance.
Reduces dark circles
Dark circles under your eyes could be the result of lack of proper sleep at night as well as mental stress. Kombucha tea is loaded with adaptogenic properties that could allow you to ‘adapt’ yourself to stressful situations in life.
Drinking Kombucha tea may support your mental health and prevent anxiety and depression that could otherwise affect the duration and quality of your sleep.
Applying Kombucha facemask may help to relax the facial muscles and ease those signs of stress. These positive changes in your mental health and skin would not just reduce dark circles under your eyes, but also promote healthy personal relations.
A stress-free mind could help enable you to have healthy interactions with your family, relatives, and friends. This could enhance your relations and reduce conflicts thereby improving your personal life.
Exudes glow
A natural glow on your face is what you would notice when you start using Kombucha face mask or toner. The skin lightening and antioxidant properties of this drink could enhance the overall health of your skin making it appear naturally vibrant.
And when your skin has that vibrant glow, it could have an encouraging effect on your self-esteem and self-confidence, the two things you need to be successful in your career and personal life.
Now that you have realized how something as simple as Kombucha tea can improve your skin health, lets see how to prepare a skin toner and face mask using Kombucha tea.

Aloe Vera Kombucha Skin Toner
This homemade kombucha facial toner can work wonders for your skin. The perfect combination of two best skin-friendly ingredients – Kombucha, and Aloe Vera – could heal the skin cells damaged due to aging and restore the youthful glow and firmness of your skin.
Research studies have shown that Aloe Vera possesses natural anti-aging properties. It can rejuvenate the skin by stimulating the production of elastin and collagen. These 2 components form the strong network of cells within the layers of the skin keeping it firm and taut during your younger age.
However, with advancing age, your skin starts losing elastin and collagen. And this is when your skin starts losing its firmness and develops wrinkles and fine lines.
Aloe Vera and Kombucha can together fight these signs of aging by improving the regenerative potential of the skin cells. These ingredients can stimulate the production of elastin and collagen thereby making the skin firmer and youthful. This can help to reduce the signs of aging including fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots.
Now that you have learned how exactly this Aloe Vera kombucha toner works, let us move forward to find out how to prepare and use it to let your skin exude the youthfulness it once did.

Lavender oil soothes your skin and reduce blemishes, breakouts, and rashes while frankincense brightens your skin.
Adding passion flower oil relaxes the muscles in your skin and eases out those creases that have been formed due to mental stress and anxiety. Passion flower oil also allows you to sleep well by calming your mind and thus, reducing dark circles.
Tip 2:
You can also add a small amount of vitamin E oil to the toner. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that prevents premature aging and supports the growth of new skin cells to speed up cell regeneration.
Tip 3:
If you love gardening, try growing Aloe Vera at home. It grows easily and does not require much effort to maintain. You can cut a leaf of Aloe Vera to squeeze out the juice. You can use this fresh juice to prepare the toner for better results.
SCOBY Face Mask – the best of Kombucha skin care
At first, I was a bit skeptical applying a SCOBY face mask containing kombucha on my face. I was particularly worried about the sugar content of Kombucha. I was not sure if using sugar on the face was a good idea.
However, my concerns were allayed when I learned the SCOBY ferments out the sugars during the process Kombucha is brewing thus creating a serum that is rich in probiotics.
This is when I decided to try preparing a face mask using Kombucha and the results turned out to be wonderful.
Let me share with you today the best ways to prepare a Kombucha SCOBY face mask to brighten up your face and reduce dullness, dark circles, acne, dark spots, and abnormal pigmentation.
Honey Kombucha Facemask
When it comes to improving your skin health, honey beats most other ingredients. I have used honey in a variety of ways to enhance skin complexion and reduce issues such as dark spots, aging, and acne.
The soothing properties of honey ease acne breakouts and relax the facial muscles thereby slowing down the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Honey also act as a natural antioxidant and protects your skin against free radicals, sun rays, pollutants, and chemicals in cosmetics.
And when we add all these benefits of honey to the probiotic and regenerative properties of Kombucha, what you get is a face mask that can improve your skin health considerably.
Let us have a look at how you can use the goodness of Kombucha and honey to prepare a gentle, soothing, and rejuvenating facemask.
Ingredients
- A cup of Kombucha tea
- A SCOBY
- 2 to 3 tablespoons of honey
How to prepare
- Add Kombucha tea to a small glass container and place the SCOBY on the top of it to kickstart the process of fermentation.
- Cover the bottle with a dark cheesecloth. Do not miss this step as it is essential to keep your kombucha facemask from getting attacked by insects. The cheesecloth would allow the good bacteria to flourish and grow to speed up the brewing of your kombucha.
- Place the bottles at a warm and dark place for about 7 to 10 days. The ideal brewing temperature is about 75 degrees. If you live in a colder country, you may place the jar in your kitchen closet where the temperature is likely to be warmer.
- Kombucha for a face mask can be considered ready once the tea appears lighter in color and the SCOBY starts floating on the top. The brew should also look fizzy due to the carbonation released during the fermentation process. These changes indicate your Kombucha SCOBY is now ready to be used for preparing a face mask.
- Pour the required quantity of Kombucha in a glass bowl. Let the remaining contents stay in the jar for future use. Leave the SCOBY in the jar to allow the remaining contents to ferment further.
- Add honey to the Kombucha in a glass bowl and mix well to form a rejuvenating face mask.
How to use
- Cleanse your face with a gentle cleanser using a soft and clean cotton ball.
- Apply the face mask on your face with your fingertips forming an evenly thin film. The mask will become dry in one or two minutes. You may feel a mild itching and burning sensation at this step. However, this is just an indication that your face mask is working towards rejuvenating your face. In case burning and itching are severe, wash it off immediately.
- Allow the face mask to stay on for 15 to 20 minutes. Then, splash plenty of water on your face to wash off the mask. If you find it difficult to wash off the face mask, roll a soft cotton ball dipped in water all over the face. This would loosen up the face mask and allow you to clean your face easily.
- Follow it up by applying moisturizer.
- Do this at least once a week. You would find an improvement in your skin tone and complexion within 2 to 3 months. Your skin would also become softer and smoother with acne, blemishes, and pigmentations disappearing slowly.
Tip 1:
You may add some yogurt to the face mask if you have severe dark pigmentations on your face. Alternately, you can also add half a tablespoon of lemon juice to the mix.
Lemon juice and yogurt possess natural bleaching or skin lightening properties. These ingredients could help reduce the dark spots and patches on your skin and make it even-toned.
Tip 2:
You can also apply the SCOBY on your face. Gently remove the floating SCOBY from the container and place it on your face. Make sure your face is tilted upwards as comfortably as you can do. Let it stay for about 10 minutes and then remove it. Wash it off and apply moisturizer.
While this tip works for most people, not everyone likes the mess created by the SCOBY lying on the face with some sour contents dripping all over. You may try keeping a towel on your shoulders to minimize the mess.
Your face may feel slimy and sticky after you remove the SCOBY. You may even feel as if you are having some fungus latched on to your face. However, once you remove the SCOBY, and clean your face, your skin would feel much smoother and have a natural glow.
